Sorry folks, but the new and cool Java-based Mobile Gmail is not available in South Africa, or anywhere else in the world except the U.S. for that matter.
From the Google press release:
It is currently compatible with all J2ME-enabled phones in the U.S. and works with a variety of carrier service plans.

I’m sure they will eventually launch it to the rest of the world. Just give them a little time.
