Java-based Mobile Gmail

I’m sure tons of you have been viewing your Gmail accounts via your mobile phone for quite some time now, but viewing it via WAP is just not the same as the real thing. Google has now released a Java-based mobile Gmail. So you won’t have to WAP no more.

WAP definitely has its advantages, but all the real functionality of your gmail account is sitting in the browser. Well now that functionality will move onto your phone.

We realize the role mobile phones play as a key driver for balancing online and offline worlds, and we’re committed to developing products that help people stay connected when they’re away from their computers.

Google product management director Deep Nishar said.

The wap version of Gmail can be accessed via your phone at http://m.gmail.com, and the new Java-based mobile Gmail can be downloaded from gmail.com/app using your phone.

Accessing gmail.com/app via your web browser, gives you instructions on how to use Google to search on your phone.

I’m going to give it a try, and will let you know how it goes.

Update: I’ve downloaded and run it, but it moans about needing an active data connection. I read up on it, and it seems that you need to setup a data service on your sim card. Not sure if this is possible in SA or if Java Gmail is only going to work in the U.S. I’m gona ask the mobile genius Defza for some answers. :-) Will keep you posted.

Update 2: I found the answer. It is only available in the U.S. Read more about it here.
