IBM and Georgia teamed up to run a processor at 500Ghz! Bare in mind that you are probably browsing this site with a PC that is running at anything between 1.8GHz and 3.2GHz! The even scarier thing is that these silicon-germanium (SiGe) chips run at 350GHz at room temperature.
In order for them to get the chip to run at 500GHz, they had to cryogenically freeze the chip at -268.3 C! (-451 fahrenheit)
SiGe chips, the scientists theorized, could eventually hit 1 terahertz, or 1 trillion cycles a second.
Imagine that!
