Google-zeitgeist-2009Google has published their year-end zeitgeist and it makes for some pretty interesting reading. Taking a look at the results, South African’s are still using Google as the address bar, which does indicate the level of internet awareness in SA.

2009 has been a year of change in South Africa, and people have been using Google to keep abreast of the most interesting news and trends as well as their favourite websites. Some of the most popular searches included the firebrand politician Julius Malema and of course former Springbok Joost van der Westhuizen. This year’s Zeitgeist also reflects important South African concerns like understanding how the recession impacts the local economy, along with rising interest in the second-hand goods market from websites such as Gumtree and Junkmail cars. South Africans were keen on social networking, with high volumes of searches for social networking sites Twitter and Facebook, as well as around sporting events like the Confederations Cup and the IPL Cricket.
