Skype have just added South Africa the the list of countries that now can use SkypeIn.
SkypeIn is a service whereby you create an online number that can be dialed from any cellphone or landline number and you can pick up the call from Skype wherever you are in the World. The service costs $18 (R141) for 3 months or $60 (R470) for a full year.
To purchase a SkypeIn number, login to your Skype account online, Click Account and then Online Number where you will be able to choose a number to use. It seems that the numbers all start with 2711083.
Along with your SkypeIn number, you are also able to sign up for unlimited calls to landlines using SkypeOut. There are 3 packages that you can sign up for – South Africa 400, World 400 and Unlimited World.
South Africa 400
This package allows you to make 400 minutes worth of calls to landlines in South Africa per month. The package costs $14.95 (R115) per month.
World 400
This package allows you to make 400 minutes worth of calls to landlines in South Africa as well as in over 40 international countries per month. There are a couple of countries that also allow you to make calls to mobile phones as well. This package costs $17.95 (R141) per month.
Unlimited World
This package allows you to make an unlimited number of calls to landlines in 40 countries across the world. The only draw-back of this package is you cannot make calls to landlines in South Africa. The package costs $12.95 (R101) per month.
It’s great to see VOIP products such as Skype being able to offer their full range of services in South Africa.
