Gmail is by far the most feature rich and defacto standard when it comes to web email clients. With its large amount of storage (over 7GB and increasing daily), highly usable interface and being totally free of charge, hundreds of thousands of users have switched from other free email accounts such as Hotmail to Gmail.
The main reason why some people have not made the move from Hotmail and the likes to Gmail is because they would lose all their email messages and contacts if they had to move. That is until now. Gmail has released a new feature that allows users to import their Email archives and contacts into their Gmail accounts effortlessly. You can also optionally choose to import messages sent to your old account for up to 30 days.

The list of email providers that Gmail supports importing from is quite extensive.
- Hotmail
- Yahoo Mail
- AOL
- Live.com
- Netscape
- MSN
- Tiscali.co.uk
The full list is available here.
The new feature is currently only enabled on new accounts, with support for existing account holders being added over time. Google did say that his roll-out will be considerably slower than their normal roll-out procedure.
