One of the most powerful features in Firefox is its search bar located in the top right hand side of your Firefox browser. I bet you didn’t know that it was customizable? You can add, remove and even create your own search engines from which to search right from within Firefox!
So instead of typing in www.google.co.za or www.wikipedia.org, waiting for the site to load, and then only starting your search, just type into the search bar what you are looking for, select the engine to use, and hit enter. It couldn’t be easier!

The default search engines that are included with Firefox aren’t that useful, so here is a list of some of the more popular search engines you might want to add.
- Wikipedia – The incredible free encyclopedia.
- del.icio.us – Search through most bookmarked sites.
- Dictionary.com – its like having a dictionary in your pocket
- Google.co.za – Instead of using the default Google.com
- Google.co.za from SA – Its the same as selecting “pages from South Africa” on google.co.za – this is a definite time saver!
There are tons more search engines and websites to choose from that you can add to your Firefox Search Bar over at http://mycroft.mozdev.org/
Happy Searching!
Would be grateful if you could remove the (unnecessary here) skipcache parameter from the google.co.za links to Mycroft. No big deal but every little helps…
Sure thing! Didn’t know about it as I just copied the links directly.
Links updated.
