what is MXit and how to get it setup on your cellphone

MXit is a chat application for your cellphone, that allows you to communicate with other MXit users on their cellphones or even on a PC. The beauty of MXit is the simplicity and the cost. Currently during peak time, an SMS on any one of our network providers, costs around 80c for 160 characters. Using MXit, the exact same message, will equate to around 3 to 5c!

MXit on your cellphone

Firstly, you are going to need a GPRS / WAP capable phone. The easiest way of checking if your phone has either of these features is look through your cellphone’s menu, and if you can spot some sort of Web or Internet connectivity, then your phone is GPRS compatible!

Download MXit

Point your cellphone’s web browser to http://wap.mxit.co.za and follow the prompts on the screen. If you are getting an error trying to connect, maybe GPRS isn’t setup correctly on your phone. Call your service provider and ask them to help you to setup GPRS on your phone. They most likely will send you an SMS that will setup GPRS automaticaly.

Call Centres to setup GPRS:

  • Vodacom: 082 111
  • MTN: 083 808
  • Cell C: 086 1800400

Another way of downloading MXit is sending an SMS with the word “MG4823″ to 32227 (SMS costs R1). You will receive an SMS with a bookmark that will point you directly to wap.mxit.co.za. Once received, click on retrieve or connect.

Once downloaded, MXit should appear under your applications.

Start chatting with MXit

Open MXit on your cellphone. The first time you start MXit, you will be asked to either login, or register. Enter your cellphone number and choose a PIN number, and once you’ve completed this step, you are now part of the MXit community!

Adding contacts is pretty easy, and since MXit uses Jabber, you can add MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Chat or any jabber client.

More info from MXit or Defza’s MXit page.
