MTN looses out in the Mobile Number Portability game

MNP has been around since the 11 of November 2006, but the number of cellphone users that have actually ported their number is completely dismal. I write software for a living, and I can tell you that implementing something like MNP took some serious work. The only problem is that all 4 mobile providers lost out to MNP as it cost way more to develop than the amount of new customers they have acquired in the last 8 months or so. It will probably be another couple of years before this “little” project breaks even.

Anyway, here are some numbers:

Vodacom

New customers: 49794
Lost: 22833
Net result: +26961

MTN

New customers: 12497
Lost: 20537
Net result: -8040

Cell C

New customers: 20481
Lost: 6424
Net result: +14057

Cell C have definitely benefited the most from MNP if you take into account that they have the least number of subscribers overall. But poor old MTN. They lost more subscribers than they have gained. I’ve never liked MTN, and this just proves the point that they are probably the least liked network in South Africa.
