IT Week is the Google of SA tech sites!

I wish. Maybe if I spent more time posting than reading blogs, I might just get there! We all know that Google is the defacto standard of most things internet, so saying x is the Google of x is quite a statement and honour!

So if you do a search for * is the google of *, you will come across some interesting comparisons. Some really weird, others very true.

  • Krugle is the Google of programming code. Say what?
  • Baidu is the Google of China. So what, China is the Google of the countries!
  • YouTube is the Google of Video.
  • Michael Arrington is the Google of Web 2.0.
  • Gamespot is the Google of Videogames.
  • Nero is the Google of burning software.
  • Winamp is the Google of MP3 players. It was, not anymore…
  • Technorati is the Google of blog searching.
  • Flickr is the Google of photo sharing.
  • Bloglines is the Google of RSS readers. Not anymore, Google Reader is the Google of RSS readers, if that makes sense.
  • Amazon is the Google of online book retailers.
  • ImageShack is the Google of free image hosting.
  • TailRank is the Google of memetrackers.
  • Skype is already the Google of VoIP.
  • Pandora is the Google of music. Last.fm?
  • Honda is the Google of automakers. No way, Toyota is.
  • imdb is the Google of movies.
  • MySpace is the Google of social networks. Not for long, Facebook will be.
  • iTunes is the Google of the podcasting world.
  • Lonely Planet is the Google of guidebooks.
  • 37signals is the Google of small teams.

Are there any others you can think of? Here are a couple of mine:

  • Wordpress is the Google of blogging platforms.
  • MXit is the Google of cellphone IM’s.
  • Chuck Norris is the Google of…. No, Chuck Norris is Google.
