For all Windows users, the first application they should always install on their PC is antivirus software. Facebook have announced that they have teamed up with McAfee to offer Facebook users a free 6 month subscription to use their antivirus software.
All you have to do to get the licence is become a fan of McAfee on Facebook. Once the 6 month subscription is over, you will be able to buy another subscription at a discounted price.

From the Facebook blog:
One of the best defenses against security threats is a good offense, and we want to help you take the offensive by having the latest security software installed on your computer. Today, we are announcing a year-long partnership with McAfee to offer all 350 million people who use Facebook the ability to download a six-month subscription to McAfee security software at no cost, along with a special discount once the six months are over.
You can take advantage of this offer by visiting the Protect Your PC tab on the McAfee Page on Facebook.
We’re committed to doing everything we can to help you protect your account and make your experience on Facebook as safe and enjoyable as possible. We invest in dedicated teams and advanced technical systems that detect and block suspicious behavior. When we find a message with a link to a fake login page or other malicious website, we prevent it from being sent and delete all instances of it from the site. We also work with third parties to get malicious sites added to browser blacklists or removed completely.
For the rare case in which an account is compromised, we’ve developed a unique process that requires the account owner to take steps to secure the account and learn security best practices. We’ve also incorporated custom McAfee software into this process for people identified as having infected computers. Now, if your computer is infected, you will be asked to run a scan like the one shown below and clean it before accessing Facebook. We’re not aware of another free Internet service that takes this much responsibility for helping people keep their accounts secure.

Multichoice announced today that they will be adding a 2nd HD channel to its HD PVR subscribers.
From the 26th of December, DSTV are planning to go live with Supersport HD dedicated to sports coverage. This coincides with the start of the cricket test match between SA and England.
Initially, Supersport HD will broadcast sports intermittently, but will move over to a full 24-hour service on the 12 of February, which coincides with the start of Super 14 Rugby.
Supersport HD will be broadcast on channel 171 and schedules published on supersport.com as well as other media channels.
“We are pleased that we are able to make this viewing experience part of our DStv offering. High Definition is the new international television standard and MultiChoice would like to ensure that our customers are always kept abreast of new developments. The new Supersport HD channel will make viewing sport on DStv an even more exciting and rewarding experience,” said Nico Meyer, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa regarding the imminent launch.
This is just another reason why I believe Supersport to be the no.1 sports broadcaster in the world.

Google has published their year-end zeitgeist and it makes for some pretty interesting reading. Taking a look at the results, South African’s are still using Google as the address bar, which does indicate the level of internet awareness in SA.
2009 has been a year of change in South Africa, and people have been using Google to keep abreast of the most interesting news and trends as well as their favourite websites. Some of the most popular searches included the firebrand politician Julius Malema and of course former Springbok Joost van der Westhuizen. This year’s Zeitgeist also reflects important South African concerns like understanding how the recession impacts the local economy, along with rising interest in the second-hand goods market from websites such as Gumtree and Junkmail cars. South Africans were keen on social networking, with high volumes of searches for social networking sites Twitter and Facebook, as well as around sporting events like the Confederations Cup and the IPL Cricket. Take a look below to get sense of the Zeitgeist, or spirit of the times, in South Africa for 2009.

I was invited to attend Nokia’s The Way We Live Next event at the One&Only hotel in Cape Town. It was an intimate affair with around 15 people (bloggers mostly) attending and it was really well received.
I was expecting to see Nokia pass out the kool-aid and pitch all their cool phones and ideas onto me, but with Rich Mullholland kicking things off, there was definitely no chance of that happening.
I thoroughly enjoyed Rich’s talk and with only a few of us in attendance, it was more interactive and personal. Rich shared some ideas on phones, where devices are heading and how they got to where we are today. Definitely some thought-provoking stuff.
“Learn, unlearn and relearn”
2 of Nokia’s products I was lucky to get my hands on where the new Nokia 3G booklet and the Nokia N900. Even with my affinity to Apple and their hardware, I really would consider both these Nokia devices if I was in the market for a netbook or a new phone.

Thanks to Nokia and the team at Fleishman-Hillard (Olga-Jean, Tracy and Sarah) for inviting me and for putting on a great event.

I was approached by the kind folks over at Zagg to review one of their iPhone invisibleSHIELD’s. I’ve now had the invisibleSHIELD on my iPhone 3GS for around 10 days.
What is an invisibleSHIELD?
ZAGG’s invisibleSHIELD™ is created from an ultra-tough, patented film that is exclusive to ZAGG for covering consumer electronics. Transparent and amazingly thin, the invisibleSHIELD is designed to precisely match the contours of every device, providing unbeatable scratch protection. ZAGG’s invisibleSHIELD is the world’s first and best solution of its kind, and the patent-pending application process will keep gadgets looking great.

At first I was pretty intimidated by the instructions as well as by the 2 pieces of film that I had to wrap around my iPhone. However, after watching their videos on how to apply the shield, I realised it’s a lot easier to install that I initially thought. It took roughly 10 minutes to get the film onto my iPhone.

Positives
- Apart from the obvious protection against scratches, my iPhone is now a lot easier to grip. I can almost be a little more carefree with the phone in my hand.
- It hasn’t affected the touch screen at all.
- There are no bubbles, lines or prints on front – so it really is invisible.
Negatives
- Applying the invisibleSHIELD to a white iPhone, you notice some dust and dirt that collects on the edges of the shield on the back of the phone
- Its not going to protect your phone if you drop it.
At $25 (R180) its definitely something I would consider to protect your iPhone against scratches as well as giving you extra grip on your phone should you have a tendency to drop things.
Zagg not only have shields for iPhones, but for a whole host of products. Check out their shields for phones, cameras, GPS’s, laptops, iPods and others.
